It will help you better understand basketball betting and gauge your chances of winning when putting your money on the line with friends. Or even improve your chances betting with a professional bookmaker. Let’s start by giving you a much better chance of winning higher profits! Don’t ever put money on the line by betting blindly. Always keep in mind that regardless of your level of knowledge, this is a numbers game. Luck definitely has a huge role here and any bettor knows that luck can eventually run out! So, never bet anything that you can’t afford to lose.

Understanding these phrases will help you answer many questions you may have regarding different wager types. Basketball betting includes terms such as: Spread, Money-line, Totals, Quarter & Half Lines, Halftime, Parlay (Teaser) and Futures. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, learning these crucial phrases is essential for understanding betting on the NBA. Knowing these can also give you a leg up on your friends!

“Spread”

The spread, or line is used stabilize the chances of either team winning a wager. A -negative number on the spread symbolizes the odds on favorite. While a +positive number on the spread symbolizes the underdog. It’s not unusual to see point spreads up to 15 points due to the high amount of scoring involved in any game. Even underdogs can win! Just because a team is considered an underdog at the start of a game doesn’t mean that they don’t have a chance. Many things can happen in the first half of a game that effect the spread

“Money-line”

The money-line is based off of which team everyone thinks will win. Odds for or against a team can be pretty drastic, especially when a higher quality team is matched against a lower quality team. Again, a -negative number symbolizes the favorite. While a +positive number symbolizes the underdog. Here, the amount you win is based on the money-line odds. Going for the easy money on a favorite will not earn you nearly as much as putting a much smaller bet on an underdog. But you never really know who is going to win and anything can happen!

“Totals”

You can place a bet on the total score accumulated during a game by each team with a totals wager. A book maker will decide what this number is before each game. Then the bettor uses this number to determine if the final score of a game will be over or under the number set by the book maker. As I said, it’s a numbers game. But if you bet correctly, you can earn quite a hefty sum.

“First Quarter & First Half Lines”

Each NBA game lasts a total of 48 minutes. These games are broken up into four 12 minute quarters. Everyone has the ability to place on the first quarter and first half outcome, before a game begins. Basically, with this bet type, you are deciding which team will cover their spread towards the end of the first quarter and again towards the end the first half line.

 “Halftime Lines”

Halftime is an ideal time to re-think your basketball betting strategy. At halftime a new spread is calculated. This sets up the action for the rest of the game. Knowing what occurred during the first half of a game can help you decide on the outcome. Bets placed on the spread at halftime pay out the same profit as bets placed at the start the game. So, whether you place this bet at the beginning or during the halftime line produces the same earnings.

 “Parlay or Teaser”

You can choose to combine your spread, totals, and money-line bets into one. This type of bet is called a Parlay. By combining your bets in this way you will increase your payout amount. A Parlay and a Teaser are basically the same thing. You rely on points set by your book maker that help increase the chances of winning, but will also decreases your overall profit. Parlays increase your payout and risk. While Teasers decrease your risk, but you won’t earn as much off of the payout! Basically shifting your bets to cover one big payout instead of the smaller odds bets.

 “Futures”

Futures can be placed on a team that has a chance to win their own conference or even take home the entire championship. But futures bets don’t just cover teams. You can also place futures bets on many other categories, such as a league’s MVP or teams over-under totals for a season. Odds fluctuate throughout the season and give a bettor many chances to increase their chances at a bigger payout.

As you can see, knowing these phrases can help you out considerably. Now that you know what a spread is, or how to place “futures bet”, you will have a better chance of obtaining a larger payout. Don’t be shy about going out with your friends and placing a few bucks on your favorite team. WOW them with your knowledge of the game and shift your bets accordingly to ensure your success!
